Get The Dirt on BMX

Trucks traveling from construction sites dumped dirt onto an empty lot between the South Tahoe Middle School and Al Tahoe Elementary Tuesday. Eager middle school students, who were outside during gym class, gazed through the chain link fence and watched the proceedings, knowing that dirt will soon be shaped into a BMX track.

“That’s some good stuff there,” said John Thomaselli, as a truck dumped dark clay-like dirt onto a growing mound.

“That’s what we’re looking for,” shouted Lauren Thomaselli.

Both are the track promoters and South Lake Tahoe’s biggest advocates of BMX.

John Thomaselli later patted down the dirt with his foot and smoothed it out to check its quality. He was pleased with the results.

Good dirt is key component to the track, and the Thomasellis are demanding the best.

And they have an ace up their sleeve. Rob Giustina, owner of On Course Events, and designer of BMX tracks for the Vans Triple Crown and the Gravity Games, will help design the course.

Trucks are expected to deliver a total of 2,500 cubic yards of dirt by Monday. For now getting the fence up, which will secure the course, will be a priority. Volunteers are needed to help put up the fence and will be needed to help shape the track.

For information on the track or to find out how to volunteer call 542-9337 or check the Web at http://www.tahoebmx.com
