Getting off on the right foot: Shoe store branches out

Nine West shoe store manager Sharon Alderson has endured the shop’s first winter in South Lake Tahoe, a lackluster season that made business even tougher for a store that opened in the Factory Stores at the “Y” center only one year ago.

Alderson is used to challenges — even unusual ones. She’s amazed more locals don’t know the store exists. She estimates only a third of her customer base is local, a trend she’d like to change.

“With locals, they instinctively think of going off the hill,” she said.

The Bristol, Pa.-based Nine West — with its more than 2,000 stores nationwide — specializes in foot wear, carrying a large assortment of shoes and boots, along with hats and bags.

For shoes, casual flats are popular. Straps top the list for women who come up to go to the clubs or out for the evening, a notion a Chico woman agreed with when she thought of hot summer nights at home.

Nine West can be reached at (530) 542-1905 and is open every day from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
