Girl dies 3 days after being shot by brother

RENO, Nev. (AP) – A 3-year-old girl accidentally shot in the head by a 14-year-old brother has died at a Reno hospital.

Amanda Marquez was taken off life support and died Friday night at Washoe Medical Center, where she was taken after the Tuesday night shooting at her Dayton home about 40 miles southeast of Reno.

Lyon County sheriff’s investigators said the boy apparently was playing with a handgun and did not realize it was loaded until it discharged. A .380-caliber handgun round was found during an investigation.

Prosecutors were unsure whether charges would be filed.

”It would be premature to speculate what we’ll decide, but at this point all the evidence indicates that it was a tragic accident,” District Attorney Leon Aberasturi said.

The girl was shot in a bedroom of the family home on Fortune Street after a brother found their father’s small-caliber handgun.

Deputies initially were told that the girl was wounded in a drive-by shooting involving a tan car seen speeding from the scene.

But deputies said the story was intended to protect the brother and they later determined the shooting was an accident.
