Girl donates her golden tresses

Tribune

Chelsi Beaty, 6 1/2, not only has a new look, but also has the satisfaction of knowing she has helped a worthy cause.

Chelsi recently donated 12 inches of her hair to Locks of Love, a nonprofit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under the age of 18 with medical hair loss. Her hair had been trimmed, but never really cut since she was born. It was her own idea to have her long blond hair cut.

“I donated my hair because it’s a good thing to do and my friend Alicia Mason did it a few years ago,” Chelsi said. “I will probably let it grow out again, I’m not sure, yet.”

Locks of Love provides custom-fitted hair prosthetics free of charge or on a sliding scale to children whose families meet the guidelines. Donors provide the hair, volunteers staff the office and the manufacturer hand-assembles each piece, which requires approximately four months. The organization, which began in 1997, has helped more than 600 children since its first year of operation. Children comprise more than 80 percent of the donors, making this a charity where children have to opportunity help other children. For more information about Locks of Love write to 1640 S. Congress Ave., Suite 104, Palm Springs, FL 33461.

A homeschooled student, Chelsi is the daughter of Rob and Eddi Beaty of South Lake Tahoe. She enjoys participating in gymnastics, soccer, swimming and the Moppets beginning music class.
