Good start to Tahoe Rim Trail work this summer

They came. They saw. They cleared some trails.

Twenty-four volunteers converged on Spooner Summit over the weekend to kick off the 1999 work season for the Tahoe Rim Trail.

“It was an excellent work day,” said Lynda McDowell, executive director of the Tahoe Rim Trail Association. “Usually we have groups of around 10, 12, 15 people. We were really pleased to see 24 people. And we hope to see that many people every Saturday – and Tuesday.”

Work days for the Tahoe Rim Trail typically are Saturdays and Tuesdays. Additionally, special groups – such as the Sierra Club, Boy Scouts and Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe – also have work days.

Only about 12 miles of trail near Mt. Rose have not been completed. Officials hope to be finished by the end of 2001, and then the 150-mile peak-to-peak trail around Lake Tahoe will be a complete loop.

Workers Saturday completed maintenance work south of Spooner Summit. Because of snow, the construction season is very narrow. Now that it has begun, however, crews will work until Oct. 15.

The Tahoe Rim Trail organization was formed in 1981. Work started in 1984. The Tahoe Rim Trail Association has more than 700 members.
