Governor candidate at Tahoe

Tribune Staff Report

California Lt. Gov. Gray Davis, a Democratic candidate for governor, will make a campaign visit Saturday to South Lake Tahoe.

Davis, one of three candidates vying for this year’s Democratic nomination, will greet interested residents at a reception that begins at 10 a.m. at the Carpenters Local 1789 meeting hall, 2720 Young St.

He will be the guest of the El Dorado County Democratic Central Committee and the Lake Tahoe Democratic Club.

Davis has served as former Gov. Jerry Brown’s chief of staff and served in the California Assembly before being elected to the statewide office of controller and then lieutenant governor.

In the June primary, he will face two Democratic rivals who each can draw from sizable personal wealth – Rep. Jane Harman and airline tycoon Al Checchi. While his opponents have already begun expensive television campaigns, Davis criticized each at last week’s state party convention as lukewarm Democrats attempting to buy the election.

Davis criticized donations Checchi made to Republicans Bob Dole and Steve Forbes in the 1996 presidential election, and called Harman “the best Republican in the Democratic Party.”

The most recent Field Poll showed Harman has vaulted into the lead for the June 2 primary election.
