Governor earmarks $5 million for tourism ads
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – Gov. Gray Davis announced Saturday that he has set aside $5 million for radio, television and newspaper ads to encourage Californians to travel throughout the state.
The Sept. 11 terrorist attacks have resulted in fewer people staying in hotels, flying and eating out, a blow to the state’s $75 billion tourism industry, one of California’s top four.
From Fisherman’s Wharf, which had about 55 percent fewer people than usual, Davis said resuming travel would give the message that life goes on.
”If you take a trip and invest money in our economy, it is literally an act of modern-day patriotism,” he said.
The decline has led to many losing their jobs, including about 35 percent of unionized hotel workers in San Francisco, and nearly 50 percent in Los Angeles and Santa Monica.
