Group reported missing from Scout camp

Authorities were launching a search-and-rescue operation Wednesday night for eight girls and three adults who were reported missing from a Girl Scout camp at Lake Kirkwood.

Sheriff’s personnel from Alpine and El Dorado counties were participating in the search, said El Dorado Sheriff’s Sgt. Howard Jencks. The group had left the camp at 5 p.m. and were reported missing about 8 p.m., Jencks said. The group had apparently gone hiking in the area of lakes Margaret and Alpine, officials said.

As of about 9 p.m., a full search-and-rescue call-out was under way. The initial plan was for rescuers, including volunteers, to survey the area to see what combination of foot teams, dogs or four-wheel-drive vehicles would be most effective, Jencks said.
