Soroptimist International of Tahoe-Sierra and Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe, local member clubs of an international volunteer service organization for business and professional women, are seeking applicants for their joint recognition program targeted to young women who make their community and the world a better place. The Violet Richardson Award honors young women between the ages of 14 and 17 for volunteer action, such as fighting drugs, crime and violence; for cleaning up the environment; and for working to end discrimination and poverty.

“Soroptimists believe that by acknowledging young women’s volunteer involvement now, they will grow up to be vital, active members of the community,” said Shari Young, president of the Tahoe-Sierra Club.

The Violet Richardson Award program begins at the local Soroptimist club level, where the type of award varies according to club preference. The local clubs will select at least one person to compete for the regional prize of $1,000. In addition, winners at the regional levels can name their preferred volunteer organization to which $1,000 will also be donated. One finalist will be chosen from among the 28 regional winners for an additional award at the national level, including a contribution of $2,500 to the finalists’ volunteer organization.

Applications for the award program are available at South Tahoe High School, George Whittell High School, local churches and libraries, or from the local Soroptimist clubs by calling either Karen Johnson at (530) 542-5750 or Jennifer Scanio at (530) 541-6681, ext. 11. Applications must be returned to Karen Johnson at P.O. Box 18727, South Lake Tahoe, CA 96151, by Dec. 1.

The award program is named for Violet Richardson, the president of the first Soroptimist club in 1921. Richardson believed in personal responsibility and in the motto, “It’s what you do that counts.” She lived her life accordingly, as an active member in her community who was committed to creating opportunities for girls and young women. Soroptimist established this award to honor the memory of this unique woman and her dedication to volunteer action.

Soroptimist International of Tahoe-Sierra provides funds for the Violet Richardson Award through its annual spring fund-raiser, An Elegant Evening. Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe raises funds for the award through its annual fall Food and Wine-Tasting event.
