GWHS student wins Gene Upshaw scholarship

Tribune staff report

Geroge Whittell High School Student Garrett Bronken of Stateline received the fourth annual Gene Upshaw Scholarship Award at this year’s American Century Championship on Sunday.

The $5,000 scholarship, awarded in memory of NFL Hall of Famer and National Football League Players’ Association Executive Director Gene Upshaw, is given to students who show leadership, and a dedication to community service and academic excellence.

Upshaw’s widow, Terri Upshaw, was at the Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course to present Bronken with the award.

“It’s something that I think Gene would be extremely proud to have his name linked to as a leader, as a professional football player,” Upshaw said.

Gene Upshaw participated in the ACC, and the scholarship, funded equally by NBC Sports and Edgewood Companies, is to honor his memory.

“We created this upon Gene’s passing four years ago because we wanted to ensure that his legacy lived on,” said Gary Quinn, senior director of programming for NBC Sports.
