Harrah’s gives comic the ‘Max’ effort in May 17 fundraiser
South Shore celebrity and stand-up comedian Howie Nave has put together a fundraiser to benefit comic Max Alexander.
Maxed Out Comedy will be at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 17, in the South Shore Room at Harrah’s Lake Tahoe. Nave hosts a gathering of six headliners, including Minden comedian Kat Simmons, as well as Improv favorites Rocky LaPorte and James P. Connolly.
Alexander, who is struggling with dialysis and needs a kidney transplant, commented in typical stand-up attitude: “What I’m going through, I don’t wish on anyone ” not even a mime!”
When Nave heard of Alexander’s problems, he put some calls out to fellow comics and found them more than willing to help out in a time of need. Many of them routinely donate their time to community fundraisers and spend time touring to entertain members of the armed forces abroad. As LaPorte put it, “We have to watch out for one another.”
Alexander is a nationally known stand-up comic, and with motion picture appearances in “Punchline” with Tom Hanks, “Roxanne” with Steve Martin, and of particular interest to local residents, in Jim Carrey’s “Man on the Moon,” filmed at Harrah’s.
Alexander has also had a television presence, with appearances on “The Practice,” “My Wife and Kids,” and a long association with “The Tonight Show” with both Johnny Carson and Jay Leno. He has also been on the other side of Jerry Lewis’ annual Muscular Distrophy Association telethon.
