Harry Potter book club plans second meeting

The first meeting of the Harry Potter Book Club took place June 12, but it is not to late to join in the fun. Anyone who would like to join the second meeting on July 10 should start reading “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.”

People who have already read the Harry Potter books will have a head start and can come and enjoy the fun of discussing their favorite characters and events. The club will meet from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the South Lake Tahoe Branch Library, 1000 Rufus Allen Blvd.

In “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” Harry Potter survives a terrible summer with the Dursleys before going back for his second year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Just before he leaves to return to school he receives a warning from a house elf named Dobby that he should not return to Hogwarts or he will be in mortal danger. Despite several obstacles thrown in his way, Harry finally makes it back to Hogwarts.

This year there is a new teacher for the Defense Against the Dark Arts class. People who have read all the Harry Potter books know that teachers for this class never seem to last more than a year. Gilderoy Lockhart is the new teachers He has written many books on magic and the students had to purchase several of them for the new school year. He is also very good looking and his ego is even bigger than the stack of books he has written. Poor Hermione has a serious crush on him but Ron and Harry don’t like him.

Soon Harry starts to see why Dobby had warned him and why he keeps trying to get him to leave Hogwarts. Someone starts turning Hogwarts students into stone. Could it be Draco Malfoy who is even more vicious than he was during Harry’s first year. Most of the students suspect Harry himself, especially after they discover he is a parselmouth. This means he is able to talk to snakes and he is suspected of being the heir to Sliterin, who was known for his ability to talk to snakes.

So, start reading “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” and be prepared to discuss it at the next meeting of the Harry Potter book club. The club will be led by Maria Lebron on the second Tuesday of every month this summer. Participants will discuss “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” July 10 and “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban on Aug. 14.
