Have You Read?: New book helps writers publish

Nancy Oliver Hayden

“The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Getting Published” by Jennifer Basye Sander and Sheree Bykofsky

There is no need for writers to flounder around in the bewildering world of publishing. Help is available for anyone who ever has wondered how to get work into print.

“The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Getting Published” by Jennifer Basye Sander and Sheree Bykofsky leads the reader through the complex steps to seeing their book on a bookstore shelf with humor and insight. I especially enjoyed the asides and comments the authors sprinkled throughout the chapters.

Between them, the authors have been in the book business for 50 years. They have been interns, editors, authors, agents and packagers, and they have learned what works and what doesn’t.

Sanders has been an author and a book packager for nearly 20 years. She founded the Big City Books Group, a packager with more than 40 successful titles in print. She also offers a Women’s Writing Retreat Weekend a few times a year at South Lake Tahoe.

Bykofsky, founder and owner of the Sheree Bykofsky Literary Agency, has written more than a dozen nonfiction books and represented hundreds of successful titles. She teaches university courses on publishing and speaks at writers conferences.

The guide includes a step-by-step explanation of the publication process, words of wisdom to help get your manuscript in shape, tips on how to keep track of industry trends and how to find your own bookshelf space within them, and marketing strategies to get yourself and your book in the public eye.

Divided into easy-to-follow categories, “The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Getting Published” covers everything from the reasons writers write and submitting your work to publishers, to how to get a book contract, working with a publisher and building your career as a writer. At the back of the book are several appendixes of resources as well as a glossary that contains all the words and terms you’ll need to hold your own in conversations with agents, editors, publishers and other book people.

The book also includes a CD-ROM with pitch letter and proposal templates, sample agent and publisher contracts, comprehensive lists of literary agents and an overview of major writers’ conferences.

“The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Getting Published” is $19.95 and is available at bookstores and online at http://www.idiotsguides.com.
