Have You Read …? Novel introduces Patterson’s ‘Women’s Murder Club’
“1st to Die” by James Patterson
When a young couple is brutally murdered on their wedding night, homicide detective Lindsey Boxer of the San Francisco Police Department is put on the case. Lindsey is still reeling from the news that she is suffering from Negli’s aplastic anemia, a fatal blood disease, when she is called to the scene of the murder.
Soon another newlywed couple is found murdered, their bodies dumped in a Napa vineyard. When a third newly married couple is found murdered in Cleveland, Ohio, authorities begin to believe there is a serial killer at work. Lindsey and her new partner, Chris Raleigh, need to find a common denominator between murders that have taken place thousands of miles apart.
Lindsey’s best friend is San Francisco medical examiner Claire Washburn. With the official investigation going nowhere, Lindsey meets with Claire to bounce ideas off of her. Together they try to come up with possible leads that will help them solve the case.
Cindy Thomas, a reporter from the San Francisco Chronicle, works her way past police to visit the scene of the first murder. When Cindy manages to appear at another crime scene ahead of other press members, Lindsey makes a deal with her. After setting ground rules, she invites Cindy to her next meeting with Claire. Using each other’s expertise, the women gather evidence until they come up with a suspect. Without enough evidence to make an arrest, Lindsey takes their suspicion to her friend Jill Bernhardt, an assistant district attorney. Lindsey asks Jill to join her friends.
The women, who have dubbed themselves the Women’s Murder Club, meet to discuss what they know and what evidence they need to gather in order to make an arrest.
As the story develops, so does the reader’s connection to Lindsey’s emotions; her fight to live, her love for the new man in her life and her frustration over the case. The plot races along taking twists and turns along the way until it reaches its surprising conclusion.
