EMERALD BAY – A head-on collision Thursday afternoon between a Ford F250 and a Mercedes killed a woman and sent the truck’s driver to Barton Memorial Hospital for minor injuries.

Authorities didn’t release the identity of the woman until family is notified. She died at the scene. Dispatch reported the call came in at 3:54 p.m.

The Ford appeared to have drifted into the northbound lane of Highway 89 and struck the Mercedes with its left front. The collision crumpled the Mercedes’ hood and crushed the driver.

CalStar, a medical transport helicopter, was initially called but later canceled.

Both drivers were wearing seat belts.

The Ford, which had RW Plumbing stenciled on the side, suffered damage to its front end. The driver was not identified.

Units from Lake Valley Fire Protection District, California Highway Patrol and South Lake Tahoe Fire Department arrived at the scene. The highway was closed in both directions for at least an hour while tow trucks were summoned.

A purple blanket covered the deceased from onlookers. A gift wrapped in pink and white wrapping paper was spotted in the trunk which had it’s top popped open. Then, as authorities measured the crash site and firefighters waited, the woman’s cell phone rang in her car. No one answered.
