Healthcare advice from one who’s been there

Provided to the Tribune

As a physician, medical insurance executive, and experienced patient, Dr. Bob Sheff knows that it takes inside knowledge to navigate today’s medical system. For more than a decade he has used this knowledge to teach patients how to negotiate the intimidating, confusing, and often downright scary rules, regulations, and physician attitudes that now define America’s health care system.

He offers that same knowledge and skills to everyone in his candidly honest book, “The Medical Mentor: Get the Heath Care You Deserve in Today’s Medical System.” Written with the compassion of one who has “been there,” Sheff shows step-by-step how people can become their own medical advocate and get the kind of care they deserve – when they want it, from whom they want it, and where they want it – no matter what their insurance company says.

“The Medical Mentor” offers rare insider information about:

— Selecting and handling insurance companies;

— Hospital practices that can put people in jeopardy;

— How people can protect their health in the doctor’s office and their life in the hospital;

— How to know which sources (including medical Web sites) to trust and which not to trust.

This indispensable guide provides all the information people need to know before they need to use it. It’s the first thing they should pack on the way to the hospital or doctor’s office.

Sheff trained as a physician at the University of California, Los Angeles, the U.S. Public Health Service and John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Md. He practiced radiology with a private medical group in Baltimore and later with the Patuxent Medical Group, a multi-specialty medical practice that was owned by BlueCross/BlueShield of Maryland.

His second career was as a medical group administrator. During his tenure with PMG he played a variety of management roles, including medical director and president.

These roles and the fact that the group was owned by BlueCross/BlueShield Shield opened new doors for him, and he began performing additional work in his third career as a health insurance executive.

This included being a senior vice president for BlueCross/BlueShield of Maryland and president of their then four HMOs.
