Heavenly plans fundraiser to help injured skier with medical bills

Peter Walenta, a longtime local resident, spends his winters as a master boot fitter at Heavenly Sports in the California Base Lodge and his summers as an adventure guide for Heavenly Mountain Resort. Some may recall his days as owner of Kaprun West Ski Shop on Kingsbury Grade.

On Jan. 11, in the course of a birthday ski break, Walenta was injured by a skier who left the scene of an on-mountain incident. What started out as a perfect birthday ended with Walenta being airlifted to Reno, where he spent five days in the hospital. In spite of many serious injuries, including numerous facial, shoulder and rib injuries, Walenta, who prides himself on physical fitness, pulled through with indomitable spirit and determination.

To assist Walenta with expenses incurred while hospitalized and during his recuperation, Heavenly Sports, Heavenly Mountain Resort and the winter sports community are planning a fundraiser at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 28 at The California Bar inside Heavenly Mountain Resort’s California Base Lodge.

We hope you can join us for the silent auction, raffle and support for Walenta. Contact Nancy McCoy at (775) 586-2113 or Cathie Rahbeck at (775) 586-6113 with any questions or to make arrangements to have auction items picked up.
