Heavy fog diverts Care Flight

Heavy fog at the Lake Tahoe Airport forced an emergency medical helicopter to land at the Heavenly Ski resort helipad Thursday night, said John Morrison, director of critical care for Care Flight, the air ambulance service that made the flight.

While incoming flights to the Lake Tahoe Airport are prevented several times a year because of extreme snow or heavy cloud cover in the mountains, fog is rarely an obstacle.

“It is not unusual during this time of year that the weather becomes an issue all around here and all around the country,” Morrison said. “We frequently do things like this where we find the closest place we can to rendezvous with the ground ambulance.”

Mary Flores, emergency manager for Barton Hospital, said the Barton helipad, which was shut down by Caltrans at the end of October, also had poor visibility, and even if it had been open the flight would have been diverted.

“This is the the first time in the 3 1/2 years that I have been here that fog has been an issue,” Flores said.

Janis Brand, airport administrative assistant, said the airport has about 8 or 10 days a year when weather conditions prohibit landings. She said the closures don’t last for more than 10 hours.

“If it was half an hour earlier they could have flown in,” she said.
