Help on the holidays

Delicia Spees

The holiday season is getting closer, and the South Lake Tahoe Family Resource Center is beginning another year of serving our community during the holidays. We all know that times have been tough in our community and state for the past few months. Many families are struggling to keep their heads above water and can barely scrape together enough money to put food on the table, let alone celebrate Thanksgiving and Christmas. This is where you come in.

In the past, we have relied on generous and dedicated members of the community to help brighten the holidays of those who are less fortunate by donating to the holiday programs offered by the Family Resource Center. If you are interested in making a difference and helping families celebrate Thanksgiving and Christmas, please support one of these opportunities:

1. Christmas dinners: Through generous support from the local Albertsons and Safeway stores, the Family Resource Center purchases dinners for families in need for about $35 to $45 per family.

2. The Gift Basket Program: The Family Resource Center will purchase a laundry basket full of household necessities such as laundry detergent, shampoo, soap, toothpaste, bathroom tissue, and many other items. These are items that we all need and take for granted, unless you can’t afford them.

3. Family adoption: Help put presents under the tree for a family. You can adopt a family of any size and provide Christmas presents for their children. Families eligible for this program are generally large or single parent with children under 14 years of age. We will provide information on the gender, age, and gift suggestions. Gifts should be preferably wrapped and delivered to the Family Resource Center by Tuesday Dec. 20.

If you would like to donate to any of these programs, you can do so through a monetary donation or by purchasing items for the baskets or toys for children.

Please call the FRC at (530) 542-0740 if you have any questions.

Thank you for bringing holiday joy into the lives of our community.
