High-caliber teams to participate in South Tahoe Shootout
July 10, 2009
Without a doubt, the most high-caliber basketball to be seen in South Lake Tahoe this year will happen over the weekend.
The annual South Tahoe Shootout is scheduled for today through Sunday at South Tahoe Middle School’s two gyms.
Highly regarded programs from Northern California and Utah are entered in the 13-team, three-day tournament.
“Three different colleges called me to ask for schedules, and said they were coming up,” said South Tahoe coach Chris Proctor. “Usually there are a few others that come up because of the nature of other schools involved in this.”
Because of ongoing construction projects at South Tahoe High, the tournament had to be moved to South Tahoe Middle School. Games begin at 1 p.m. today.
Host South Tahoe will play six games over the weekend, including three on Saturday. South Tahoe will open against Branham at 5 p.m. today, then cap off the first day of action against St. Mary’s 8 p.m.

On Saturday, South Tahoe is scheduled to play Oakland at 2 p.m., Foothill at 4 p.m. and Campolindo at 7 p.m. The matchup with Foothill will pit former STHS star players Drew Hibbs and Kevin Kelly against their former team.
South Tahoe will conclude the tournament Sunday with an 11 a.m. game against Judge Memorial, Utah.
“It puts you to the test,” said Proctor of his team’s matchup against the high-powered program. “They are a very well-disciplined team, and it’s a great experience for us to play against teams who are very well-coached and well-disciplined.
“This year, we’re a little better prepared for these better teams.”
