High-speed chase suspects maintain no contest pleas

A couple who stole a digital camera from Staples in July and then led law enforcement on a high speed chase through three counties decided Thursday in El Dorado County Superior Court they would not withdraw their no contest pleas.

Their sentencings are now expected Nov. 1 at 1:30 p.m. Kenneth Callwallader, 38, pleaded to assault with a deadly weapon causing great bodily injury and reckless driving during the course of a pursuit. He could be sentenced to a maximum of six years and eight months in prison.

His girlfriend, Nicole Rhiley, 29, pleaded to second-degree burglary and false impersonation. She could be sentenced to a maximum of three years in prison.

Rhiley is also wanted by Arizona on burglary charges related to a theft from a Wal-Mart on April 28, 2000. In that case, prosecutors allege she maced a security guard and tried to steal $316 worth of goods.

She jumped bail and eventually ended up at South Lake Tahoe on July 26 with a stolen digital video camera in her hand. Callwallader and Rhiley drove from Staples in a stolen Toyota Tacoma and hit an employee of the store, breaking his arm in three places.

After injuring the man, they led law enforcement on a high speed chase that ended at Monitor Pass.
