Highway 50 closed for two hours Tuesday due to suspicious package

Tribune staff report

Highway 50 was closed for two hours Tuesday after police received a report of a suspicious package at the bus stop in front of Safeway.

South Lake Tahoe police officer Ric Martinez responded to the scene and found a large, dark-colored piece of luggage, about 2 feet wide, 4 feet long and 2 feet deep, with a note attached intended to get a response from police. According to police, the unsigned note accused specific federal, county and city law enforcement and court officials in the midwest of committing a violent crime against the person who left the package.

Officer Aaron Crawford, an explosives expert, also responded to the scene and determined that, if the package did contain explosives, it would case extensive damage to a wide area. The officers called the Douglas County Bomb Squad to the scene for investigation and police closed U.S. 50 and Safeway and evacuated the Best Western Timber Cove Lodge, police said.

The bomb squad X-rayed the packaged, which revealed indistinguishable contents, and used a robot to render the package safe. The package contained packaging, photographs and clothing, but no explosives, police said. The roadway was reopened after about two hours and Safeway and the lodge were allowed to resume business.
