SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif.-Highway 50 will be closed for two weeks beginning May 11, just days before thousands of people are expected to be visiting the area for the Amgen Tour of California.

“This project is a great example of how Caltrans is putting the Recovery Act to good use, providing jobs and at the same time making U.S. Highway 50 safer for the public,” said Caltrans director Cindy McKim.

The closure is part of the first stage of a safety enhancement project that will remove damaged rock walls and replace them with a barrier that meets current safety standards.

Caltrans is maintaining a website, Way2tahoe.com, with information about the closure, but it has yet to be updated with the announced date.

The official detour is either through Placerville on Highway 49 or through Sacremento on Highway 16. Both take travelers to Highway 88 and into South Lake Tahoe on Highway 89. Travelers should anticipate an extra hour of travel time, according to a statement released by Caltrans.
