Highway 50 reopens following accident

Highway 50 is now opened in both directions as of 4:45 this afternoon after a head- accident near Strawberry closed the highway for about two hours, according to the California Highway Patrol

Emergency crews respond to the scene west of Strawberry in which authorities reported fatalities. At least three, possibly four cars were involved, according to emergency dispatch from Placerville.

Traffic was tied up on both sides of the highway, as emergency crews worked to extricate some of the victims from their vehicles. The accident was reported at about 2:20 p.m.

According to law enforcement dispatch, there were at least seven victims in the accident, including an infant who was trapped in one of the vehicles.

A coroner was dispatched to the scene.

A CALSTAR helicopter, dispatched to the accident was forced to turn around because of bad weather, according to police scanner traffic.
