Highway driver hits tree

Gregory Crofton

A truck driver from Winnemucca, Nev., slammed the right front side of his cab into a tree Sunday night going west on U.S. Highway 50.

The driver, Steven Sweat, 24, was uninjured in the wreck, which occurred at 5:30 p.m. west of Sierra-at-Tahoe near Alpine Avenue. Sweat told the California Highway Patrol he swerved off the road to avoid stopped traffic.

“A vehicle was stopped to make a left turn,” said CHP Officer Earl Boyd. “He (Sweat) went off the road and struck a sign post and a tree.”

Sweat was driving a drilling truck owned by Humboldt Drilling of Winnemucca. Traffic was reduced to one lane until the truck was towed to South Lake Tahoe. CHP cleared the scene at 7:35 p.m.
