Hiker breaks leg at Horsetail Falls

A hiker who broke his leg near Horsetail Falls was found Monday by a CALSTAR helicopter rescue team.

Richard Hauser, 31, of Encinitas, Calif., was hiking with a group of friends and family when he slipped and fell, fracturing his left lower leg, authorities reported.

Horsetail Falls is located off Highway 50, about 15 miles west of South Lake Tahoe.

Personnel from El Dorado County Sheriff Search and Rescue, Lake Valley Fire and the U.S. Forest Service responded to assist the victim at about 2 p.m. Monday.

He was located by CALSTAR. Search and rescue teams were directed to the site, where Hauser was treated and stabilized.

The rescue teams carried Hauser to an area where the CALSTAR helicopter could land safely, authorities said.

He was flown to Barton Memorial Hospital in South Lake Tahoe, where he was treated for a fractured left leg.
