Hiker gets stuck on Eagle Lake Trail

“Help, help” were the desperate words of a hiker who got stuck in the rocks high on the north side of Eagle Lake Trail.

Michael Daukins, 57, told an El Dorado County sheriff’s deputy Saturday that his son got ahead of him. In an attempt to catch up, Daukins tried to create a shortcut, hiking straight up a mountainside in a pair of sandals.

Within minutes, Daukins could not go up or down and began yelling for help. Somebody heard his cries and dialed 911 with a cell phone.

At 12:35 p.m., the El Dorado Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Unit was on scene setting up equipment for a high-angle rope rescue. At first, rescuers could hear Daukins but could not figure his exact location. Eventually it took a California Highway Patrol helicopter to spot Daukins.

Four hours later, Daukins was on the ground, uninjured and thankful.

“He apologized, and wanted all of our names, I think for a thank-you card,” said deputy Patrick Harris, who works out of Meeks Bay and coordinated the rescue.

Harris said eight search and rescue volunteers and one Meeks Bay Fire Department volunteer responded to the call. U.S. Forest Service employees closed the parking lot at the campground so rescuers had room to work.

As they were wrapping things up, Harris said a man showed up and asked for his father. Apparently Daukins’ son didn’t know his father had been stuck near death for hours.
