The East Bay’s hip-hop heroes are joining forces again in South Lake Tahoe.

The Grouch and Zion I, the underground dream team that collaborated on “Heroes in the City of Dope” in 2006, are headlining the Fresh Coast Tour 2008 with Mistah FAB and guests the Bayliens and Mavrik.

“We all share a strong connection with Oakland,” the Grouch said of the collaboration, which culls its title from a Too $hort track. “A lot of beauty and hope has come out of the struggle here.”

The town evidently has been big enough for the both of the backpack hip-hop acts. The Grouch, a founding member of Living Legends, has been a fixture in underground West Coast hip-hop for more than a decade and has released seven solo projects.

Zion I ” MC Zion and producer Amp Live ” has released three albums on its own, as well as a number of EPs and mixtape collaborations in addition to collaborations with the Grouch.

“Our past collaborations ” Silly Puddy and Flow ” were always fan favorites, and the creativity just flows when we get together in the studio,” Zion said.

“Heroes in the City of Dope” takes on social issues while keeping the heads nodding, all within a cohesive album. Zion I and the Grouch worked with guests such as Chali 2Na, soul- and funk-rocker Martin Luther, singer Esthero and Eligh of Living Legends. Bay Area hyphy rapper Mistah FAB (see below), who makes a guest turn on “Hit Em,” also joins the tour.

The Fresh Coast Tour stops at Whiskey Dick’s on Sunday, March 2. Doors open at 9 p.m.
