Horizon theater opens Wednesday

A variety of good movies in a comfortable modern theater with appealing foods is a moviegoers dream come true.

The dreams of South Shore moviegoers will come true Wednesday with the opening of the Horizon Stadium Theater inside Horizon Casino Resort.

“We’re very excited about having a state-of-the-art movie theater on the premises,” Horizon general manager Howard Reinhardt said. “We love movies.”

“The residents of Lake Tahoe and Stateline, Nevada deserve a world-class movie theater complete with all of the latest innovations and technologies,” said David Lyons, director of marketing for Wallace Theater Corporation II, owners of the new theater. “We are proud to be a part of the Horizon Casino, as the addition of this state-of-the-art theater will make for a terrific entertainment destination.”

The Horizon Stadium Theater features 100 to 200 plush rocking seats in each of the eight theaters. Couples can cozy up during a film by lifting the armrest between seats.

The stadium-style seating provides a 14-inch height difference between rows for better viewing and extra leg room.

“Our company believes strongly in stadium seating and this new concept will be included in 100 percent of our new projects,” Lyons said.

The audio experience is enhanced with Dolby Digital Surround EX, the latest sound innovation from LucasFilm’s Skywalker Sound facility, plus power amplifiers, stage speakers and sub-woofers.

The theater snack bar has an upscale flair with espresso, smoothies and gourmet pretzels, besides the usual array of popcorn, soda, candy and hot dogs.

With eight movie screens instead of the five in Wallace’s Stateline and Lakeside 4 theaters combined, the company expects to feature a wider variety of films.

“We’ll be playing all the Hollywood blockbusters and we’ll occasionally add foreign and independent films,” Lyons said. “We’ll have two to three new films every Friday.”

Opening films are “Mickey Blue Eyes,” “The Sixth Sense,” “Blair Witch Project,” “Bowfinger,” “Mystery Men,” “The Thomas Crown Affair” and “Runaway Bride.”

Opening the following Friday is “The 13th Warrior,” “Dudley Do-Right” and “The Astronaut’s Wife.”

Plans for the public opening night celebration include a variety of movie giveaways. On the first Saturday of the showing of the family film “Dudley Do-Right,” movie guests will receive complementary packages of Sweet Tarts.

Wallace Theater Corporation II is based in Portland, Ore., and operates more than 700 screens in the United States and numerous international markets.
