Horse therapy center seeks aid

Kids & Horses Therapeutic Riding Center is a nonprofit corporation that offers a free horsemanship program as a means of therapy for adults and children with physical and/or emotional disabilities. The results improve strength, balance, coordination and self-esteem.

Lessons are given on a weekly basis. Instructors work with various public school programs as well as students who have applied individually. Kids & Horses is a member center of the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association, which also certifies its instructors.

Volunteers are needed for a variety of jobs including: Side Walkers to help support the riders during therapy, Leaders to walk the horse on a lead rope and Groomers who handle tack and saddle, bridle and brush horses.

There is a very flexible schedule and even one hour a week would be greatly appreciated. Volunteers must be at least 13 years of age.

Since all services are provided at no cost to the student Kids & Horses is supported by private donations, service clubs, corporate contributions and grants. Everyone can share in their quest with contributions of money or time. Anyone interested in becoming a student, volunteer or benefactor may contact Shelley Edwards at (775) 267-1775. Kids & Horses is located at the Double W Ranch on Esaw Road in Minden, Nev.
