Hospital lab earns coveted accreditation

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE ” Barton Memorial Hospital’s laboratory department has won high kudos for running a department that is “equal to or more stringent than the government’s own inspection program,” said Susan Robert, with the College of American Pathologists (CAP.) The award means accreditation for the lab department by the Commission on Laboratory Accreditation of the CAP.
Dr. Diane Oliver, Medical Director of Laboratory at Barton, was recently advised of this national recognition and “congratulated for the excellence of the services being provided,” said Robert.
Barton is one of about 6,000 accredited laboratories nationwide.
“We are very proud that our hospital lab passes such rigorous inspection, earning up accreditation by CAP,” said Oliver.
During the CAP accreditation process, inspectors examine the lab’s records and quality control of procedures for the preceding two years. CAP inspectors also examine the entire staff’s qualifications, the lab’s equipment and facilities, safety program and record, as well as the overall management of the laboratory.
“This stringent inspection program is designed to ensure the highest standard of care for the lab’s patients,” said Robert.
