Hundreds attend Kirkwood Christmas parade

About 200 spectators witnessed the spectacle of a light show at Kirkwood Christmas Eve, when an illuminated line of skiers and boarders descended the mountain from the top of the Alpine County ski area’s new Cornice Express quad at sundown.

Kirkwood’s Torchlight Parade and fireworks display brought out people of all ages.

Some awaited the event in a packed and rancorous Off the Wall Bar and Grill. Others braved the dropping temperatures hugging a bonfire, hot chocolate or a loved one – wanting to greet the magical holiday in an unconventional way.

Bright-eyed, 6-month-old Gordie Gregory of South Lake Tahoe straddled his mother’s leg, wrapped up in warm clothes to the extent his arms refused to flank his sides.

To pass the time, some children played king of the mountain on a nearby snow tower. The bar occupied the adults on the front patio with hot toddies.

When the two torch-carrying snow riders started to arc the Zachary run, a stadium-like scream burst out of the crowd accompanied by clapping while many dropped their blankets and came to their feet.

The crowd rushed the line of torch holders, greeting them like rock stars at the end of a show at 6 p.m. One dressed in an white angel outfit and a tiara, the torch holders reciprocated with bows and smiles. They were only upstaged by the grandam of fireworks shows against the run called The Wall.
