Illegal fireworks lead to arrest

A 21-year-old Roseville man was arrested on suspicion of arson and possessing fireworks without a permit, a South Lake Tahoe police officer stated.

Andrew Rodriguez allegedly fired a Roman candle, or a similar firework device, near the corner of Friday and Cedar avenues, which started a small fire in dry brush during the late hours of July 4, the officer reported.

People nearby helped extinguish the fire, the officer reported.

In addition, the South Lake Tahoe police dispatch received 10 calls of illegal fireworks activity within city limits on the Fourth of July.

In other news:

• A 14-year-old student was arrested and booked into the South Tahoe Juvenile Treatment Center for bringing brass knuckles to South Tahoe High School where he was attending summer school, a South Lake Tahoe police officer reported.

The brass knuckles fell out one of the student’s pockets during class time, the officer reported.

• A 45-year-old female employee at Longs Drug Store on Emerald Bay Road was arrested on suspicion of embezzlement, a South Lake Tahoe police officer reported.

The woman was observed taking money from a cash register at frequent times for more than a month, the officer reported. More than $1,000 was taken, officials said.

• A 31-year-old man was arrested on a shoplifting charge when he entered Safeway supermarket and stole items from Jack Daniels whiskey and Goldschlager to energy drinks and salad bar toppings, a South Lake Tahoe police officer reported.
