Incline football stays undefeated
INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. – The Incline High football team moved to 2-0 on Friday night at Incline High stadium defeating non-conference opponent, Portola High, 45-26.
In front of raucous home crowd for the first time this season, the Highlanders jumped on the visiting Tigers early and then coasted late to their second victory in as many games.
Led by Senior quarterback, Tommy Williams, and a very fired up defensive unit, Incline scored right away and held Portola to a limited number of positive plays. The score at the end of the first quarter was 15-0.
The second quarter was more of the same as Williams and the offense were on all cylinders while the Highlander defense wouldn’t give the Tigers a chance to get comfortable offensively. The score at half time was Incline 36, Portola 6.
Coming out of the break it seemed like the undermanned Tigers were ready to go back to Northern CA and the Highlanders knew the outcome was in their favor, the only highlight was a deep field goal by Senior kicker, Aidan Midgley. The quarter ended with Incline leading 39-6.
The Final stanza saw Incline give many players some time on the field and Portola found a little life offensively. The Tigers ripped off 20 points in the quarter and gave the traveling fans some positive thoughts before driving home. The Highlanders did score one of their 6 touchdowns in the 4th quarter to make the final score 45-26.
Williams finished the game going 13-20 with 272 yards and 3 touchdowns in the air. He also ran for 48 yards on 11 carries and ran for a touchdown. Senior Jayden Abbate caught six passes for 123 yards and scored a touchdown. Senior Lucas McNamara rushed for two touchdowns on only 11 carries but he also caught three passes, including another touchdown for 54 yards and had a 48 yard punt return.
Senior Colton Barraza had 127 total purpose yards as he caught two passes for 75 yards and had a 52 yard kickoff return. Junior Halen Hanson scored the 6th touchdown of the night for Incline on a pass from Williams.
The Highlander defense had a total of 76 tackles on the night. Led by Senior Colin Combs 11 tackles and Senior Tate Gitchell’s 7 unassisted.
The undefeated Highlanders now take their talents to Pershing County on Friday night for what many believe is the battle between the 2 best teams in the state for 2A. The Mustangs are 3-0 and have scored almost 150 points so far, including at 47-13 beating of Portola two weeks ago. If you can make the 2-hour drive to Lovelock you won’t be disappointed, the Highlanders coaches and players will love to have you out there.
