Injured boy’s parents make court appearance

Gregory Crofton, Tahoe Daily Tribune

A doctor who treated a child for second- and third-degree burns testified this week at a preliminary hearing held for a former South Lake Tahoe couple.

Alfredo and Maria Esquivel, now of Oxnard, Calif., an area northwest of Los Angeles, were charged after allegedly holding their 2-year-old son in a 146-degree bath. The boy suffered serious burns that were treated with home remedies and became infected.

He was treated and released from the hospital Feb. 16 and is staying with a foster family in Northern California. The boy is still receiving treatment for his burns, said David Lehr, Ventura County senior deputy district attorney.

The Esquivels, both 25, have been held at Ventura County Jail since Jan. 31 with bail set at $250,000 apiece. They are each charged with felonies that include torture and disfigurement. Both crimes carry possible life sentences.

The preliminary hearing took place Monday and Tuesday. In addition to testimony from the doctor, police officers and neighbors of the couple also took the stand. The defense did not present any witnesses.

The Esquivels are next due May 28 for arraignment and trial setting at Ventura County Superior Court. Lehr said he expects the case will go to trial before the end of July.
