El Dorado County inmate dies in custody

PLACERVILLE, Calif. — An inmate in the county jail has died while in custody, according to a press release from the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office.

According to a press release from the sheriff, on Friday, Jan. 4, inmate Anthony Marino was found unresponsive at 3:38 a.m.

Correctional officers and medical staff attempted lifesaving efforts but Marino was pronounced dead at 4:02 a.m.

A multi-agency investigation is currently underway. The investigative team includes El Dorado County Sheriff deputies, district attorney investigators, CHP investigators, South Lake Tahoe Police Department detectives and Placerville Police Department detectives.

In October, Marino was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence, assault with a deadly weapon and various narcotic related offenses, according to Sgt. Anthony Prencipe, spokesperson for the sheriff’s office. He had been arraigned and was awaiting trial.

The county coroner will also assist in determining the cause of death.
