Inn owner concerned about construction

For Ed McCarthy, owner of the Red Carpet Inn, the wrecking ball isn’t coming quick enough.

His 57-unit motel on U.S. Highway 50 sits on the edge of the Phase I redevelopment line and is slated for demolition in Phase 2 of the project, not scheduled to begin for another two years.

When Phase I demolition begins this spring, he’ll be expected to operate his business under the drone of bulldozers and dump trucks.

“The dust, the dirt and the noise going into the wee hours of the night is going to be devastating to us,” McCarthy said. “Who’s going to want to stay there? Clearly there’s going to be a loss.”

McCarthy, who also owns the Stardust Lodge, the Colony Inn and the Americana, said he’s an advocate of Park Avenue Redevelopment. So much that he’s hoping his Red Carpet Inn will be reconsidered for Phase I demolition this spring.

“It’s time,” he said. “Redevelopment is tiptoeing into its 13th year and that puts a cloud on your property – you can’t sell it, you can’t upgrade it too much when you know it’s going to be torn down.”

Judith Von Klug, the city’s redevelopment manager, said she will look toward the Redevelopment Agency for direction on the matter.

“There’s no way around the fact that there would be some financial risk for the Agency to move them ahead to Phase I,” Von Klug said. “We’ll have to agendize the issue for discussion at the next meeting on March 21.”
