Interviews for police chief

From California to New York, but mostly California, 28 applications from people seeking the chief position of the South Lake Tahoe Police Department were received by the City of South Lake Tahoe.

City Manager Dave Jinkens pared the number to seven candidates but six appeared for a series of interviews Tuesday.

The screenings were conducted by three panels consisting of people such as two California police chiefs, city department heads including the fire chief and city attorney and the police department’s participation management team.

“All panels will be asked to rate those candidates who are qualified for the position and list those qualified,” Jinkens said in an e-mail. “The list will be submitted to (myself) and the most qualified candidate will be made a conditional offer of employment subject to a thorough and complete background check, credit history and medical examination (including psychological). I will meet personally with each panel to discuss their list and with top candidates defined.”

Earlier this year Don Muren announced his intention to retire from the chief position July 7. Jinkens voiced a desire to have the next chief in place before Muren retires to help smooth the transition.

The annual salary for the position ranges from $87,180 to $105,972.
