Irene Lester shares the fine art of pastels
The Tahoe Art League will welcome Irene Lester, pastelist, as the speaker/demonstrator for the Wednesday meeting. The league will meet from 7 to 9 pm. at the South Lake Tahoe Senior Center, 3050 Lake Tahoe Blvd.
Lester was recommended by Tricia McWhorter, TAL member and frequent contest winner. McWhorter attributes her very successful pastel paintings to studying with Lester before moving to Tahoe. Lester will return to SLT in late September to present a pastel class for about 10 students.
Born in Oroville, Lester was raised on a small farm near Nevada City. She earned a teaching degree at Chico and then moved to Seattle. It was in Seattle that she was given her first set of pastels. She quickly learned from the Pastel Society that “the challenge and appeal of pastel lies in its pure vibrant colors, diverse texture and enduring freshness and immediacy.” After 30 years in the cool moistness of the Pacific Northwest, Lester returned to the bright warmth of Fair Oaks, Calif.
Lester has participated in many juried shows, the first in 1978. She enjoys painting animals, still life and plein air landscapes. She is a member of the Pastel Society of the West Coast, a signature member of the Sierra Pastel Society and an accomplished teacher at The School of Light and Color in Fair Oaks.
Her “Poppies on the Hill” painting was selected to appear on the cover of SureWest’s Roseville 2004/2005 telephone directory. This was SureWest’s first “Bringing Art Back to Business” directory cover art program. In response to this honor Lester said that she was “blown away.” “This type of recognition is a validation of one’s work and it is extremely exciting to know that so many people will be seeing my pastel on the directory cover.” Lester’s work can be viewed at The Chroma Gallery at 10030 Fair Oaks Blvd., Fair Oaks and http://www.thechromagallery.com.
Members, guests and potential new members are invited to attend Tahoe Art League meetings from 7 to 9 p.m. the second Wednesday of the month at the SLT Senior Center, 3050 Lake Tahoe Blvd. Upcoming TAL events include the Summer Show at Heavenly Village, Aug. 19 and 20 and the TAL Art Expo at Edgewood Oct. 18 and 19. Space in these events is limited, so call to learn of participation possibilities. Art league members are also eligible to participate in “Art Around Town” and outdoor shows.
