In the 17th century, a cultural and religious celebration honoring Saint Patrick and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland began. Today, few people (at least in America) do anything more than use St. Patrick’s Day as an excuse to wear fun outfits and get drunk.

Whether you’re planning to simply wear green, go out on the town, or are set to honor the Irish heritage and culture in true St. Patrick’s Day fashion, chances are you’re likely looking for ways you can celebrate the holiday in Lake Tahoe.

We’ve chosen to supply you with a few pubs — from both North and South shores — that remain true to Irish tradition (or, at least, in terms of food served) that still give you the chance to indulge in your favorite libations (at this time of year it better be a Guinness).

The Auld Dubliner

The Irish pub and restaurant is one of only a few in the Tahoe region. On St. Patrick’s Day the eatery will focus on all things Irish cuisine: On March 17-18, The Auld Dubliner is specializing in corned beef and cabbage, shepherd’s pie and fish ‘n’ chips.

Over the same two-day span, guests can look forward to live music throughout the day: Local Celtic-inspired musicians are currently slotted to play the venue, which was created to bring the spirit of a traditional Irish pub to the Sierra, according to the restaurant’s website.

Beer is served in 20-oz. imperial pint glasses, making this the perfect stop to get your fill of Guinness. If you’re looking for Harp, Smithwick’s or Jameson and Midleton Irish Whiskey, this place has it too.

The Auld Dubliner is located at 1850 Village S Road Suite 41 in Olympic Valley and is open Monday through Friday from 11:30-2 a.m. and on Saturday and Sunday from 9-2 a.m. View the full menu and learn more online at http://www.aulddublinertahoe.com.

McP’s Taphouse Grill

This Stateline stop has everything you need to make your St. Patrick’s Day great. From the corned beef and Reuben sandwiches to the Irish dip, Ol’ Dubliner burger (featuring corned beef, sauerkraut and grilled onions) and Mulligan stew — and, of course, shepherd’s pie — the establishment tops it all off with approximately 40 beers on tap.

On St. Patrick’s Day the Irish pub will be jumping: McP’s welcomes local musicians Bread & Butter Band at 8 p.m., and food specials (notably the Reuben wrap and corned beef with cabbage) and drinks will be served all day long.

Live music, tons of beer and an extensive menu — what more could you want?

McP’s Taphouse Grill is located at 4125 Lake Tahoe Blvd. Suite A, and is open Sunday through Wednesday from 11 a.m. to midnight, and Thursday through Saturday 11-2 a.m. Additional details are available through the pub’s Facebook page (@mcpstaphousetahoe).

MacDuff’s Public House

While the pub technically has its origins in Aberdeen, Scotland, it still serves up a few traditional Irish meals you won’t want to pass up this St. Patrick’s Day.

The Real Shepherd’s Pie (fresh ground lamb, carrots, onion, celery, corn and a cheesy potato crust), Steak and Guinness Stew (carrots, onion, celery, peas and potatoes served with a house-baked bread bowl) and Corned Beef (tender, slow-cooked and served with mashed potatoes, carrots and sautéed dill cabbage) all grace the menu.

Did we mention Guinness is also served here?

MacDuff’s Public House is located at 1041 Fremont Ave. and is open daily 11:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Get more information and view the full menu online at http://www.macduffspub.com.
