While the opening of the Carson City freeway was big news last week, closer to home, work on Jacks Valley Road was completed Friday.

Paving is complete and crews were painting the stripes on the road on Thursday.

The $4.4 million project is the first completed using bonding from the nickel gas tax approved by Douglas County commissioners in November, County Road Engineer Jon Erb said.

Contractor Q&D Construction Inc. began work in June and was done two months later.

“Q&D started on June 5 and finished by Aug. 4,” County Road Engineer Jon Erb said. “They did a good job. Ahead of schedule and on budget.”

It has been more than a quarter of a century since the last time the road was rebuilt in 1990.

The oldest route in Carson Valley, Jacks Valley Road was part of the original Emigrant Trail and traces a portion of the old Pony Express route.

It bore the brunt of heavy traffic during last winter’s storms when Highway 395 was closed twice due to high water on the Carson River.

Other regional road projects scheduled to be completed using the $12.2 million in road bonds include Tilman Lane, Centerville Lane, Dresslerville Lane, Johnson Lane and Waterloo Lane.
