John Denver sightings false

A London newspaper report that John Denver was hanging out at Lake Tahoe, entering “John Denver Look Alike Contests” and singing “Country Roads” are totally false, according to the singer’s publicist.

“I’ve had phone calls even from Florida about this,” said publicist Paul Shefrin.

The “Daily Star” reported on May 7 that Denver came in third in a John Denver Look Alike Contest at Lake Tahoe, Calif. The newspaper did not specify where at Lake Tahoe or when the charade took place.

“There is absolutely no truth to the story,” Shefrin said. “I talked to John (at his home in Colorado) and asked him if there was anything he’d done lately that would remotely related to that story and he said ‘no.’

“If you’ve dealt with John at all, you’d know he is not a practical joker,” Shefrin said.

Harrah’s Lake Tahoe is the only resort that Denver has performed in or stayed at and calls to their entertainment department revealed that he has not been a guest.

Denver, 53, last performed at Stateline in January 1988 when he hosted the John Denver Celebrity Classic at Heavenly Ski Resort and performed in Harrah’s South Shore Room.

In the London paper’s report, Denver supposedly entered the look alike competition under the alias of Bob Matthews.

“Just the mention of that alias, Bob Matthews, should indicate that this is totally false,” Shefrin said.
