SOUTH LAKE TAHOE – Paula Peterson thinks everyone has it in them to perform service.

“Inside most people, there is a want to give back to the community in some way,” she said.

So she’s put together a day for service projects on the South Shore. “Tahoe Cares” will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 27, and Peterson said it’s an opportunity for many community members to participate in different sorts of projects around the area.

Several service opportunities have already been scheduled – work on the swingset at the South Lake Tahoe Women’s Center, painting at the Boys & Girls Club, work on the bike trails and at the community garden at Lake Tahoe Community College and litter clean-up in Meyers. Peterson said she’s trying to gather more projects.

Since it’s the first year for the event, Peterson said she’s not sure how many people will be able to show up, but she’s aiming high.

“I would love to see hundreds and hundreds of people show up. That would be awesome,” she said. “In reality, maybe it’s only 40 or 50, but I would like to see hundreds.”

Peterson, a 30-year resident of Tahoe, said she’s hoping that those who can’t donate their time will donate snacks or supplies. She’s hoping many people will find it inside them to volunteer, she said.

“I just called it Tahoe Cares,” Peterson said, “because we do.”
