Junior Enrichment Tournament Tennis is seeking support for its programs

Provided to the Tribune

The tennis season is winding down and Junior Enrichment Tournament Tennis is having a very successful summer.

In partnership with the South Lake Tahoe Parks and Recreation Department, we have had 175 kids in our summer program so far, and have full classes in our Caregiver and Me, 7-9, 10-12 year-old, and Tournament Team groups.

The Free Lessons program has again been a big hit, attracting an average of around 55 kids to the South Tahoe Middle School courts each Monday night during July and August. With a large batch of up and coming junior players preparing themselves for competitive play, the future looks bright for the JETT team and for South Tahoe tennis in general.

JETT lessons and outreach will continue into the early fall, and we hope to launch an indoor program this winter.

JETTis looking for a suitable gymnasium, or multi-purpose room space, in which we can use our training aids, foam balls and mini-court nets, to keep our kids in shape and psyched for tennis during the snowy winter months. This winter we will continue to apply for grants to support our Summer 2006 programs, and will formalize curriculum and organize our fund-raising efforts. Next year our goal is to resurface our other two courts. By 2007 we hope to see the city of South Lake Tahoe’s only free and open tennis courts playable and looking good both for locals and for the thousands of tennis playing visitors we receive every year.

The JETT mission: “To promote diversity, and encourage academic and athletic excellence through tennis.” We received nonprofit status this year, and have been successful in writing and receiving grants from the United States Tennis Association’s Multicultural Participation, and Facilities Funding programs. We have also secured a generous donation from the Prim Foundation of Nevada. Thanks USTA and Prim Foundation. One of our goals for this year is to resurface at least two of our worn-out Swiss Flex plastic tile courts at the South Tahoe Middle School. With seed money in place from the USTA and the Prim Foundation, we are trying to work with the city of South Lake Tahoe Parks and Recreation Department, and the South Tahoe Unified School District, to raise matching funds.
