Kelsey Smith leads tight trio of Vikings in Bronco Invite

There is little separation between South Tahoe High distance runners Kelsey Smith, Kylie Noll and Shelby McIntyre.

The three Vikings finished 2.2 seconds apart, as all three were in the top five of the 3,200 meters Friday night at the Bronco Invitational in Sacramento.

Smith was runner-up to Oak Ridge’s Hayley Scott, finishing in 11:19.53 to Scott”s 11:22.33. Noll was right on Smith’s heels with her third-place time of 11:20.05, and McIntyre was right there, too, at 11:21.75.

“Kelsey pushed the pace the whole race with Kylie on her heels and Shelby just a couple meters back,” said STHS distance-running coach Dan Wilvers.

“Kylie was phenomenal, just like Shelby was last week, in that she’d never raced in a big 3200 before and she ran a huge PR. She was closing down on Kelsey the last 50 meters, and that’s not easy to do. Shelby was also very tough and had stomach cramps but ran through them.”

Wilvers is excited about what the rest of the season will bring for his three stars.

“To have three girls racing at this high level is unprecedented for most high schools,” Wilvers said. “I heard at the meet that Shelby’s 11:16 last week makes her the fifth- fastest freshman in the state of California for this year and only six seconds off the leader. That’s some elite company she’s hanging with.”

Next up for the trio is the Meet of Champions Saturday in Sacramento.
