Kirkwood Hosts Winter Trails Day on Saturday
Kirkwood Mountain Resort and REI are teaming up to host Winter Trails Day at the Kirkwood Cross Country Ski and Snowshoe Center this Saturday, Jan. 12 with free cross country skiing lessons, free snowshoe demos and REI Outdoor school seminars.
Winter Trails Day is a national campaign now in its 13th year designed to expose newcomers to the benefits of cross country skiing and snowshoeing. This one day event is geared towards families, hikers and other recreational enthusiasts as both sports can be enjoyed by participants of all ages and ability levels. For more information, please contact Kirkwood’s Cross Country and Snowshoe Center at (209) 258-7248.
“Snowshoeing is easy-to-learn winter sport with great fitness and social benefits,” said Debbi Waldear, Kirkwood’s Cross Country Ski Center Director. “Both cross country skiing and snowshoeing are activities that allow access to serene landscapes and unspoiled trails while at the same time providing aerobic workouts. In addition, first-timers will find both sports surprisingly easy to pick up, especially with a few tips from an instructor and the latest gear to demo.”
Kirkwood’s Cross Country Center Ski will be offering free cross country beginner packages including lesson, equipment rental and trail pass. Participants must preregister at the Cross Country Ski Center and lessons will be held at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
Representatives from snowshoe manufacturers Tubbs, MSR, Redfeather and Atlas will be on hand offering free snowshoe demos along with industry specialists sharing tips and answering questions.
REI Outdoor School will be hosting various seminars throughout the day including topics such as avalanche safety, beacon use, introduction to GPS and more. REI will also have an inventory of the latest winter apparel designed specifically for active outdoor use.
