Kudos and Kindness: Nurse applauds ICU staff

I am writing this on behalf of Barton Health’s ICU staff. As a member of this unit I am so proud to inform our community of what we have recently accomplished as nurses. The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses offers an exam that tests critical care knowledge and competence.

Completion of this costly and very difficult exam grants a registered nurse CCRN status (a nationally recognized Critical Care Nurse). Our unit’s goal is 100 percent CCRN, we have reached 70 percent (10 nurses so far). Our ICU has the highest CCRN ratio among the closest hospitals to this area.

This exam covers so much crucial information, it has taken many hours away from our families to study. It is nearly $300 to test, which we have paid for out of our own pockets. This is not a job requirement; we receive no immediate pay raise for this status alone. We have taken this upon ourselves in an effort to make our ICU awesome.

This is yet another example of how this economy has inspired people of all careers to go above and beyond. If you or your family ever find yourself in our ICU, please know we will go the extra mile. We are a great staff and I am so proud to have our ICU in our community, and also to be a part of it. My hope is that Tahoe feels the same.
