Lady Vikings claim cross-town rivalry

The lady Vikings and Warriors meant business as they took the court for a physical cross-town rivalry.

The Vikings took control of the game early on, and cruised to a 49-24 win over Whittell on Saturday at South Tahoe High School.

“It was a very physical game on both sides,” Whittell coach Tom Esposito said. “There were probably 45 fouls I would imagine, and I don’t know how many more fouls the refs could have called without this going into Sunday.”

South Tahoe’s Bailey David and Brooke King put up an early 10-1 lead, with eight unanswered points as Whittell struggled to find its shot.

The Warriors never quite found it, with the exception of Amanda Harris.

Harris scored 22 of Whittell’s 24 points, but one shooter wasn’t enough.

Whittell had 15 turnovers by halftime, and the Vikings continued to steadily outscore the Warriors through all four quarters.

“I was happy with our defensive pressure,” South Tahoe coach Mike Neiger said. “It wasn’t our best game, but it is another win on our home court.”

It wasn’t either team’s strongest game, but South Tahoe seemed to regain composure in the second half and managed to spread the points around.

Brooke King collected nine and Bailey David, Hannah Neiger and Ally King all posted eight each. Riley Chapman and Hannah Neiger dominated the boards. Chapman had eight and Hannah Neiger had seven.

South Tahoe improved to 9-10 overall and 5-2 in Mount Rose League play. Whittell is now 8-12 overall and 1-5 in Mount Rose League play.

“The best thing about it is we get another chance, and the girls are looking forward to it,” Esposito said. “We just need to go back to the drawing board and work on our turnovers and our giveaways, and driving the ball to the basket.”

The two teams will meet again at Whittell High School on Feb. 9.
