A 19-foot Searay boat sank, after catching on fire this weekend off the shores of Marla Bay, the U.S. Coast Guard reported Sunday.

None of the seven people on board was hurt, and they were picked up by another boat before being taken in to the Tahoe Pines dock. The boating incident, representing one in a handful of sinkings reported this summer on Lake Tahoe, is considered a total loss.

Coast Guard spokesman Michael Faiver said the belief is the fire was sparked by a mechanical flaw such as an electrical short. The call came in at 3:55 p.m.

Burger burglar strikes again

Restaurants beware. The South Lake Tahoe Police Department is warning business owners to make sure their buildings are securely locked following a rash of burglaries in the last few days.

From Thursday to Saturday night, a burglary suspect has broken into four restaurants and taken cash after cutting electrical and telephone lines, police Sgt. Brian Williams reported. The eateries include Burgers A-Go-Go, Burger Lounge, Bert’s Cafe and Orchid’s.

At the latter, the suspect got access to a safe containing a larger amount of cash. Police officers are not disclosing the total value of cash taken. But Williams said it’s believed the string of burglaries may be connected.
