One of the largest components of Tahoe’s nightlife is the mix of countless breweries, bars and restaurants that offer unique drinks difficult to find outside the basin.

In our Drink of the Week segment, we’ll showcase one type of beer, wine, cocktail — you name it — to try during your stay in the region.

If you’re a big fan of movie twists, then this week’s drink of the week is sure to be right up your alley. Alibi Ale Works’ Contradiction is exactly that. If Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde decided to brew a beer together, this may be what they come with.

Like its name suggests, Contradiction is a beer with an identity crisis. Your eyes will tell you it looks like a pale ale, but when you take that glorious first sip, you’ll feel like you’re drinking a stout.

Say what? Yeah, the drinking experience is like watching “The Prestige.” By the time the beer reaches the belly, you don’t know what just happened.

Just exactly what kind of witchcraft is at play to pull off this sipping switcheroo? Contradiction is a golden ale brewed with oats and milk sugar (lactose) that’s conditioned with loads of coffee, cocoa nibs and vanilla beans.

The result is a super creamy, golden colored “stout” that’s as unique as a Sierra Nevada snowflake.

This beer rings in at 6 percent ABV. Nothing too crazy, but that’s what we all thought of Norman Bates at first, so be sure to drink responsibly.

If you do want to get wild and have a few too many without the drive home, you’re in luck. In addition to being on tap in both Alibi locations, it’s also available in cans at select retailers around the Tahoe Basin.

Only if you do stay home, I’d expect you to master the smash-a-beer-can-turn-into-a-dove-magic-trick. It’s only fitting, given the source material.

Alibi’s Incline Brewery and Taproom is located at 204 E. Enterprise St. in Incline Village, Nevada and the Truckee Tap Room is located at 10069 Bridge St. in Truckee, California. Learn more at http://www.alibialeworks.com/.
